How to Set Yourself Up for Success

Think about the last time you tried to make a change in your life, like getting fit or eating healthier. How did you go about it? If you're like most people, you probably started with enthusiasm but eventually gave up because it was too hard. Why? Our mindset lies in our ability to change.

Having the right mindset is key when it comes to health and fitness. If you don’t approach your workouts and diet with the right attitude, it can be challenging to make progress or even stick with a routine. So you’re likely to give up before you see results. Hence, True Core doesn’t just merely focus on clients' workouts or exercises; but also incorporates mindset in their transformational program. True Core believes that even if they can give you a personal trainer, guide you, or give you a meal plan if you don't work at the heart of your reasons WHY you are making that change, you’re not going to be able to make it real substantial change. So if you don't work on that mindset, you're just going to backslide.

One thing to consider for having the right mindset is your self-talk. With the rampant of posts on social media, we tend to compare other people’s successes and ideals with our internal self, which leads to low self-esteem. Thus, you should assess and work on how you talk to yourself, where and what you are comparing yourself to, where you want to be versus where you've come from. It's important to remember that what you think about yourself can significantly impact your life. If you tell yourself that you're not good enough, then the chances are that you'll start to believe it. But it's essential to have positive self-talk to remind yourself that you are capable and worthy of good things.

To have positive self-talk, you are switching to a mindset of gratitude. According to research, people who practice a gratitude routine tend to be happier, less stressed and have a perspective and an outlook of positivity instead of getting more pessimistic. It’s crucial to be mindful of those things that somebody may be taking for granted. You realize that you're not stuck in whatever is causing you irritability or anxiety and that you have all of these positive aspects going on in your life.

The second thing to consider is comparing yourself to where you were and not where you want to be - in other words, your progress! It's so easy to look at where we are not yet, so we tend to feel shame, feel less of ourselves and feel like there's something wrong with ourselves. When constantly comparing yourself to where you want to be, you can lose sight of how far you've come. Instead, try comparing yourself to where you were—it'll give you a better sense of your progress. You have to give yourself some grace, give yourself some time, and celebrate those small wins—little progress is still progress. Look back over your shoulder and remember where you started from.

Lastly, come up with your definition of success. What does success mean to you? This is a question worth thinking about because if you don't have a clear definition of success, it'll be tough to achieve it because success looks different for everyone. If you base your definition of success on someone else’s success or external influences, you’ll probably not be happy. You may not feel content or fulfilled, and you're never going to get there because they're not your values.  Defining success on your terms allows you to create your own rules for achieving it, making the process more motivating and inspiring. Define it for who you are and what feeds your soul.

One of the most beneficial results True Core has seen in their people once they start focusing on their mindset more daily is their sleep habits. Our brain needs time to rest and recharge to function at its best. When you don't get enough sleep, your body and mind are less productive and less focused. Just realizing how important sleep is and implementing that habit, you just feel better. You're able to think clearly and be more present in your day. The bottom line is that getting a good night's sleep helps your mind function better overall.

It’s not about the number on the scale or how toned your body is. It’s about being healthy and happy, both mentally and physically. And that starts with having the right mindset when it comes to health and fitness. True Core aim that after you stop working with us, or even as you're in the process of either personal training or group classes, we can make the most impact and have the lasting change that we're all after. So don’t be discouraged if you don’t see results overnight – focus on making small changes that will add up in the long run, and most importantly, enjoy your journey along the way. Just remember, it takes time and effort, but the results are worth it.
